We supply innovative and sustainable stone wool growing media solutions for the professional horticultural sector, based on Precision Growing principles. These solutions are, amongst others, applied for the cultivation of vegetables and flowers, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet peppers, egg plants, roses and gerberas. Stone wool growing media are offered together with tailor-made advice and innovative tools to support Precision Growing and thus facilitate the sustainable production of healthy, safe and tasty fresh produce for consumers.
Sustainability plays a prominent role within Grodan, from the manufacture of stone wool substrates to end-of-life solutions. The Grodan Group, founded in 1969, is active in more than sixty countries worldwide. The head office is located in Roermond, the Netherlands.
Almost 50 years
How it started
Producing more with less is in our roots. Since we invented hydroponic stone wool growing in 1969 we have continuously evolved the Grodan approach to sustainable growing. Our first customers started growing hydroponically to avoid disinfection of the soil which was done with methyl bromide, a heavy toxic chemical. Our growing media enabled them to provide the plants with water and fertilizer much more precisely and efficiently. By doing so the yield per square meter further increased, while at the same time saving water, fertiliser and subsequently saving on costs. Grodan can be seen as one of the Founding Fathers of Precision Growing for the horticulture industry. Today, growers make use of a wide range of innovative products for the entire growing cycle from the start of propagation till harvesting.

Putting Food Safety and Sustainability on the Map G.A.P. stands for Good Agricultural Practice – and GLOBALG.A.P. is the worldwide standard that assures it. GLOBALG.A.P. members create private sector incentives for agricultural producers worldwide to adopt safe and sustainable practices to make this world a better place to live in for our children.Visit GLOBALG.A.P.
RHP has been the European knowledge centre for growing media since 1963 RHP certified substrates guarantee an optimal start of the culture. The RHP quality mark guarantees that the substrate meets the right quality requirements for water and air content, pH and for example EC. It also guarantees that the substrate is pure and clean and that it can be used without risks for the culture. The RHP quality mark guarantees the quality of growing media in the chain, from raw materials production until processing and delivery at the company of the user.Visit RHP
The Organisation of Horticultural Consultants and Researchers (OVTO) is an organisation for service companies, which specialises in consultancy and research in and around the horticultural sector. The association was founded in 1985 and now has 21 members with about 200 consultants and research workers. The members with their consultants are mainly active in the Dutch greenhouse industry, though OVTO members are increasingly often offering their services to other horticultural sectors and abroad.Visit OVTO

Did you know?
Stone wool is a mineral wool made of volcanic rock. Stone wool consists of 5% solid material in the form of stone fibres. The remaining 95% is made up of pores.
The basic materials for our stone wool are basalt and limestone. These are melted to form lava in an oven with a temperature of 1,500°C. The lava is then poured over a number of fast-rotating discs. Thanks to the centrifugal force, the drops fly off the discs and lengthen to form fibres. The process can be compared with candy floss being made at a fair. The fibres are then compressed to form a sturdy mass, from which the slabs and blocks are then cut.
Our stone wool growing media are designed for Precision Growing in a greenhouse. Precision Growing focuses on ‘root zone management’, or in other words, steering of the root environment. Everything that happens in the stone wool substrate has an impact on the functioning of the root environment and therefore the development of the plant. So, we continually investigate how our products, tools and user advice can respond perfectly to changing circumstances, so that the plant is given the very best care, without wasting resources.
Precision Growing is the most efficient and effective form of growing focused on using minimum input materials to generate maximum output. Growing costs decrease, crop yield and quality increase. What's more, this form of growing actively contributes to sustainable horticulture.
Recycling and EOL
We place a high priority on sustainable business. And environmental management is an integral part of our sustainable business policy. We set up a professional (country-specific) recycling service for our clients. This service is designed to guarantee that used stone wool products are recycled responsibly.
During end-of-life processing, the material is segregated into three residual waste fractions: plastic waste, the remains of plants and stone wool granulate.
Residual drainage water is carefully separated, so as to prevent it from leaking into surface waters.
The organic waste can be used to make products such as compost.
The shredded substrate slabs, blocks and plugs are recycled into raw material in a low-energy process for various manufacturing processes like brick, cement, potting compost or soil improver production. Some of this raw material is turned into stone wool briquettes and used in the ROCKWOOL factory to create new stone wool products.
The plastic wrapping used for Grodan products is turned into plastic granulate and used in the plastics industry to manufacture refuse bags.
This re-use of resources from end–of-life products not only diverts waste from landfill, but also reduces the consumption of new raw materials, thereby reducing our impact on the environment.

The company’s ISO 9001 certification demonstrates that we comply with international quality control, management and assurance standards and the relevant legislation and regulations, whereby the focus is placed on the provision of quality to our customers.
The ISO 14001 certification demonstrates that our production process complies with the globally- accepted environmental-assurance standards. This certification is focused on the control of the environmental impact, reduction of the environmental risks and continual improvement of the environmental performance. The environmental management system developed on the basis of ISO 14001 enables companies to keep close track of the raw materials it uses, its emissions, waste, energy consumption and other environmental issues, and to assess whether it has achieved the specified environmental targets and achieved a performance in line with the prevailing legislation and regulations. This certification guarantees the maximum efforts to maintain a decent living environment, both now and in the future.
