Introducing the Grodan 6-phase model

Increasing insight into cultivation expertise, developments in cultivation systems and enlargement of scale mean that the grower has an even greater need for a structured representation of crop information. This prompted Grodan to develop the Grodan 6-phase model, a categorisation of substrate-based cultivation into six cultivation phases, to be launched early this year.

A compact description is given of the crop-related objectives per phase of crop development, whereby appropriate measures can be taken for the management of the root environment. The Grodan 6-phase model means that the actions per crop can be seen at a glance and linked to the stone wool substrate.

The objective of the Grodan 6-phase model is to create the basis for optimum crop results, initially for the phase concerned, but ultimately this will contribute to the crop as a whole. Within the Grodan 6-phase model, a phase-by-phase description is given of the specific crop and root development characteristic for that phase. The six phases are as follows: plants & rooting, root development & plant development, growth & balance, production & balance, maximum production and end production.

Action at various points in time
The Grodan 6-phase model can be used in many different ways, as the model maps out the specific requirements per phase. The model provides greater clarity when choosing a substrate for a certain crop or type of cultivation. Growers can also make use of the Grodan 6-phase model in order to adjust the slab-specific watering strategy during cultivation on the basis of the growth phase. In addition, the model can be used when determining plant load plans, temperature regimes, nutrition schemes, CO2 levels and lighting levels. Grodan’s advice devotes specific attention to the crop climate and the root climate. Growers using Grodan slabs are sent specific advice during the growing season by e-mail per phase and per crop.
