Grodan forty years
At times it is good to reflect on milestones, especially if a company continuously looks ahead, develops and innovates. Forty years ago, Grodan discovered stone wool substrate for professional horticulture. Since then, Grodan has become the market leader and the company has built a reputation as a reliable partner, knowledge platform and innovator.
Searching for an alternative for full soil, Rockwool, parent company of Grodan, carried out trials with cultivation on stone wool substrate. In the second half of the last century, horticulture wrestled with an increasing disease pressure. Methods for disinfecting the soil were expensive and labour intensive on one hand and hazardous to the environment on the other. The trials on stone wool substrate were very successful. In 1969, Grodan developed the first product line of stone wool substrate in Denmark, Rockwool’s home base. The introduction of substrate cultivation in horticulture led to an immediate increase in production and indirectly reductions in the use of water and nutrients.
Over the past 40 years, the substrate has been developed further to become what it is now: a sustainable growing medium that enables market gardeners to achieve an optimum harvest in a controllable way. In the four decades of its existence, Grodan has launched a long series of innovations, focused on the demands and requirements of market gardeners. From the master-slab and the water content meter to the 6-phase model and next generation technology. Based on a vision of sustainability, Grodan has become the first substrate producer to be awarded the EU Eco-label. The company has grown strongly over the past ten years. At the moment, Grodan serves customers in more than sixty countries through a worldwide partner network. A sound basis for further healthy growth in partnership with customers, distributors and suppliers.
