The secret to using less water in agriculture

We’ve always been told not to waste water, but do you know just how precious of a resource water is?

By 2025, an estimated 1.8 billion people will live in areas plagued by water scarcity. That number is expected to double by 2030, accounting for nearly half of the world’s population1.

Water scarcity today

However, water scarcity is not simply a problem for the future. For many people, the struggle is already here. In fact, around 1.2 billion people (approximately one-fifth of the world's population), live in areas of physical water scarcity, and 500 million people are approaching this situation. Meanwhile, 1.6 billion people (almost one quarter of the world's population) face an economic shortage, where countries lack the necessary infrastructure to obtain water from rivers and groundwater2.

Given that more than two thirds of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050, along with the rising threat of climate change and pollution, the demand for water will only continue to increase.

Water usage in agriculture

A significant amount of water also goes into growing crops. In addition, 50% more food will be needed for the world and its growing population by 20503. This places considerable strain on modern living, prompting a solution where we can feed more people while finding ways to reduce water use in agriculture.

“If we already use over 70 percent of freshwater for agriculture and we face huge increases in demand for water-intensive meat, and don’t forget those extra demands for water for energy or water stress from climate change, how do we do it?” asks Dominic Waughray, head of the Environment and Natural Resource Security System Initiative at the World Economic Forum4.

So, how do we use less water in agriculture?

Good news: hydroponic agriculture  can help growers use water more efficiently, and avoid wastage at the same time. This is thanks to water being  recirculated in a greenhouse, solving a range of water management problems.

Under regular circumstances, growing 1 kg of tomatoes in the field requires 60 liters of water. However, in a state-of-art greenhouse using hydroponic agriculture, it would take only 4 liters. The amount of water saved would be able to sustain 85,000 people for a year5.

One of the best materials to be used for hydroponic agriculture is stone wool. And what’s more, stone wool can be recycled, it absorbs 95% of its own volume in water and minimises the growth of bacteria that may attack the crop.

When all is said and done, water scarcity is a serious global issue. As we work towards shaping a more water secure future, being able to feed twice the number people with half the amount of water resources is certainly something we can drink to.

Rooted in Science: Grodan's research into pepper wilting

Since 2022, a limited number of high-tech greenhouse pepper growers worldwide have faced a rapid and severe form of wilting that posed a threat to crop production. This has left growers searching for answers. In response, Grodan funded rigorous, independent research, collaborating with a wide range of industry partners to analyse all potential contributing factors. Findings to date currently point to a specific isolate of the pathogenic fungus Fusarium as the cause. Today in the Netherlands and Belgium the isolate it is referred to as Fusarium oxysporum radicis capsici (FORC). In Canada it is referred to as Fusarium Oxysporum Species Complex (FOSC). It is highly pathogenic and specific to peppers. Initial scientific reports also show that wilting caused by the Fusarium isolate can occur in both stone wool and organic substrates.
